The five time national champion Laker Superior State Lakers have a storied history. From the early beginnings Laker hockey was destined for success. The NAIA days, led by guys like Dennis Bolton and Archie Orazietti, brought the first two championships to LSSU. Throughout the late 70’s and into the 80’s the foundation for the next Laker powerhouse was set, with the culmination of NCAA D1 Championships in ’88, ’91, and ’93.
More recently, the Lakers culminated the 2018-19 campaign with 23 wins, the most in 25 years, which also included Diego Cuglietta as the leading scorer in NCAA hockey that season. It also was the first ever GLI championship for LSSU. In 2019-20, the team traveled across the border for its first ever NCAA D1 game over in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. It boasted the largest crowd of the season, and brought together the Twin Sault’s.
Moving forward, the Lakers will now be joining the new CCHA, with commissioner and storied former Minnesota Gopher Coach Don Lucia. In the ever changing landscape of college athletics, the Lakers need to not only compete on the ice, but compete when it comes to recruiting top talent around the nation. With that, we are excited to announce the official launch of our Lock It Up For Laker Hockey Campaign. Details of the campaign are below, and we hope you will join your fellow Laker Hockey alumni in supporting the program.
How Can You Give?
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are able to give the flexibility to spread your gift out monthly over a period of 24 months, split into annual payments, or if you would like a one time gift towards the program. We also had alums express the interest in giving beyond the project, and you can do so by continuing your payment once the campaign has ended.
