“Sandy” Sanderson was a local aviator-businessman and longtime Sault Ste. Marie resident. He was one of the most highly decorated pilots in World War II and one of the founders of the Western Michigan University School of Aviation. He had a high regard for education as exemplified in a letter to his grandson, Terry. Upon learning Terry was returning to LSSU to complete his education, he stated, “Education cannot be taken from you nor can it be transferred, there is no reasonable way to measure its value. It will enhance your entire life.” Successful candidates must be a graduate of a Michigan Upper Peninsula high school with selection based on class rank, ACT, and high school GPA.
