sealTom O’Neil had a difficult childhood and experienced many hardships growing up. He joined the military at age 18, serving in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard for more than 20 years until his retirement in 1979. He worked at Canusa Hall – LSSU for more than 14 years until his death from cancer in 1996. He will always be remembered for his vivid military stories and love for his family, good friends and good times. He was not afraid to speak his mind and always believed in fighting for the underdog. This scholarship is awarded to a Michigan resident who has earned at least 26 LSSU credits majoring in any course of study with a minimum 3.0 GPA.
