This scholarship was established by the Tom O’Neil family to honor his memory and his belief in the importance of an education. Tom O’Neil had a difficult childhood and experienced many hardships growing up. He joined the military at age 18, serving in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard for more than 20 years until his retirement in 1979. He worked at LSSU’s Canusa Hall (Food Services) for more than 14 years until his death from cancer in 1996. He will always be remembered for his vivid stories of the military and love for his family, good friends and good times. He was not afraid to speak his mind and always believed in fighting for the underdog. The Thomas J. O’Neil Memorial Scholarship is awarded to a Michigan student who has earned at least 26 LSSU credits majoring in any course of study with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
